Who is the Training For?
Those who want to use it as…
– Part of their self-work, to identify their own issues around illness, dying and death as part of their ongoing personal growth
– A source of skills, knowledge and experience that can help them better support friends and/or family members in their illness and dying.
– An adjunct to their existing skills, knowledge and experience as a hospice volunteer
– The foundation for working with paying clients
Pre-Requisites:
– A comprehensive familiarity and accord with Osho’s vision of living and dying
– An interview (in person, by skype or telephone) with Maneesha.
-- A degree of self-work, in the form of meditation and inner growth workshops
Who is facilitating the training?
With the exception of the Hypnosis & NLP workshop in September, with Sudheer, Maneesha will be the facilitator throughout.
What will I gain from the training?
Psychological and meditative skills in and knowledge about the many components involved in supporting someone – a client, a family member or a friend – through the process of illness and dying. (We are working towards having the training accredited. Regulations in the UK are becoming tighter around setting oneself up as any kind of therapist and charging for one’s services. To have the work officially recognised will be a great benefit to you, as a practitioner.)
Beyond the year’s training, support for your work will be available through mentoring. In addition, there will be ongoing ‘Professional Development’ days.
What subjects will be covered in the training?
See below for a description of each component.Please note that there is some homework in the form of Diary-keeping, Required and Recommended Reading, and 2-3 assignments. Not only is this work valuable as a way to augment and embed your learning, but it is also needed for accreditation.
Allow for 2-3 hours for the required reading that will precede some workshops; how much time you devote to your diary and to the Recommended Reading is up to you. Assignments may take up to a total of 12 hours each.
Training Modules
* Experiential Enquiry
When: March Fri 2nd 6:00 pm – Tues 6th 5:00 pm Venue: (residential) Blagdon Manor, Collaton St Mary, South Devon TQ4 7PU (http://www.thebigdomain.com/large-houses/blagdon-manor)
The introductory workshop is pivotal to the training. It provides a unique opportunity to confront our own death and the issues that brings up. Not only will this impact how we face our own dying but how we live, post-workshop, too. And, of course, the experience will mean that the support we offer someone who is seriously ill-dying is that much deeper.
Doctor and author Michael Murphy suggests, ‘If there is no training, and [support people] have not taken conscious heed of their own loneliness and disconnection, no wonder that there is bluster and fear [about dying]. Since dying involves body, soul, and spirit… lectures or instruction manuals are inadequate since feelings are very much involved. In order to be a truly competent guide, [the support person’s] training needs to be very personal, helping him to imagine his own dying and the dying of those he loves. Only then will he be in a more comfortable position to help others, since he himself will be able to become a more witness and guide…(The Wisdom of Dying: Practices for Living).
* Client issues
When: April Fri 6th 6:00 pm to Sun 8th 5:00 pm Venue: (non-residential) Space Upstairs, Ashburton, South Devon (http://www.spaceupstairs.co.uk/find)
We will identify the issues or themes present for those who are seriously ill and having to face the likelihood of their dying – for example, a sense of isolation; dealing with the change in how their body functions and looks; having to be with so many ‘unknowns,’ and so on.
* Responding to client issues
When: May Wed 16th 6:00 pm to Sun 20th 5:00pm Venue: (residential) Fairfield, 51 Long St, Williton, Somerset TA44QY
Having identified the feelings and challenges that being ill and/or dying evokes, we will then turn to means by which we can address these – through psychological support and meditation methods.
* Basic Counselling 1
When: June Wed 13th 6:00 pm to Sun 17th 5:00 pm Venue: (residential) Fairfield, 51 Long St, Williton, Somerset TA44QY We will discuss those factors which make for effective communication generally – including developing an effective relationship; the therapist’s function and role; skills such as listening; minimal responses; non-verbal behaviour; the significance and use of silence – along with the use of the ‘here and now’, the client’s need for meaning, anxiety as a condition of living, and awareness of death and non being.
Pivotal to the learning will be our experimenting in dyads and triads, each participant having an opportunity to be a ‘client,’ as well as the support person, and the witness to the interaction between the two.
* Basic Counselling 2; Hypnotherapy & NLP
When: Sept Wed 12th 6:00 pm to Sun 16th 5: pm Venue: (residential) Fairfield, 51 Long St, Williton, Somerset TA44QY
The second workshop on counselling will be followed by two days on Hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). We will look at body language; mirroring; how to use language as a bridge rather than a barrier; reframing; how to induce a state of deep relaxation (and bring one out of it again, of course!) and related material.
* Pain management; Self care; Support system; Working with families; Ethics
When: Oct Fri 12th 6:00 pm to Sun 14th 5:00 pm Venue: (non-residential) Space Upstairs, 31A East St, Ashburton, South Devon (http://www.spaceupstairs.co.uk/find)
Though you may not (necessarily) need to know how to offer pain relief, it is helpful to be aware
of the various forms of non-medical pain relief that are available, and to understand how pain can impact the ill person’s ability or desire to communicate. We’ll also look at the various factors involved in a support person or carer maintaining their own wellbeing and avoiding burnout. Being one of a team and working within the context of your client being part of a family brings its own challenges, which we will discuss. Some time will be spent on understanding the ethics involved in work with the ill and dying – very important, especially when we are working alone with a client.
* Revision and Setting up as a Practitioner
When: Nov Fri 16th 6:00 pm to Sun 18th 5:00 pm (followed by a Party 7:00 - 9:00 pm) Venue: (non-residential) Space Upstairs, 31A East St, Ashburton, South Devon (http://www.spaceupstairs.co.uk/find)
Taking the time to look back over all the areas covered through the training, being aware of what we have gained and having the chance to clear up misconceptions etc, is a significant part of the learning process. In addition, there will be some time devoted to what is entailed in setting up as a private practitioner.
